Jennifer Harper

A graduate of Syracuse University, Jennifer Harper writes the daily Inside the Beltway column and provides additional coverage of breaking national news, plus long-term trends in politics, media issues, public opinion, popular culture, Hollywood foibles and “eureka” moments in health and science.

She has been a frequent broadcast commentator on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, C-SPAN, Voice of America, Citadel Broadcasting, Talk Radio Network and other news organizations. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Ms. Harper grew up in Texas and arrived in Washington in time for Watergate -- and has been tracking the political and media landscape ever since.

She is an active member of the American Federation of TV Radio Artists and Screen Actors Guild. She has won 14 journalism awards during her years at The Washington Times.

A handy new term has just emerged in the journalism world, courtesy of Rich Noyes, research director for the Media Research Center. That would be "media chaperone." Mr. Noyes introduced the phrase after realizing that ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN managed to compromise coverage of the recent Republican National Convention by "heckling" during the four-day event with negative commentary and remarks during the broadcasts. GoFundMe effort for salon owner Erica Kious reaches its $300,000 goal

The fall-out from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial visit to a hair salon this week took a positive turn in the past 24 hours. A GoFundMe effort for salon owner Erica Kious took in more than $200,000 in its first hours of existence, according to organizer Amy Tarkanian, former Nevada State GOP chairman and wife of Danny Tarkanian, who has run for public office multiple times in the state. ABC to air ‘non-partisan’ prime-time musical comedy hour on voting in 2020

ABC is taking a get-out-the-vote message to prime-time. The network will air "VOMO: Vote or Miss Out" on Sept. 14, billing the special as a "one-night-only non-partisan event." The host is comedian Kevin Hart, who will be joined by an eclectic cast that includes his fellow comics, along with musicians, and yes, some politicians. Published September 2, 2020

Biden and Trump voters have opposing impressions of Black Lives Matter: Poll

Democratic and Republican voters have distinctly different viewpoints about Black Lives Matter, according to a new poll that gauged sentiments among voters living in Minnesota. The survey was conducted by the Trafalgar Group on behalf of Conservative Clergy of Color, an educational nonprofit founded by four Black ministers. Published September 2, 2020

Many analysts now speculate that the presidential candidate who wins the battleground states will win the 2020 White House race — which has evolved into a complicated bout indeed. Minnesota is one of those battleground states — in flux, it appears, despite the state's political history, Minnesotans have voted for Democratic presidential candidates all the way back to 1976. Once again, a major study reveals that the relationship between most news organizations and the public is complicated, emotional and rocky. A wide-ranging, yearlong study conducted by the Pew Research Center finds that Americans are skeptical about the quality of news they get, but more importantly, they fret about the "intentions behind it." Three-fourths also say the news organizations fail to reveal where their money actually comes from. Published August 31, 2020

Ardent fans of President Trump are planning a sizable "National Capital Trumptilla" boat parade on the Potomac River over Labor Day weekend, and their route will glide past some of the most historic sites in the nation — not to mention the White House. The White House has two things to be proud of at this moment. It produced a remarkable national convention, and also maintained a formidable reelection campaign which never faltered despite the coronavirus pandemic, and the endless hostile attacks from the media and partisan foes. The lack of a huge boisterous audience appears to have taken a toll on two significant political events. Both the Republican National Convention and Democratic National Convention both suffered a drop of viewers during their respective events, primarily due in part to production restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Gun sales up by almost 72%; first-time buyers lead the way

The National Sports Shooting Foundation -- the NSSF -- now estimates that gun sales are up nationwide by almost 72% compared to this time last year. The trade association also says that first-time gun buyers played a heavy role in the increase. Published August 26, 2020
