Jennifer Harper

A graduate of Syracuse University, Jennifer Harper writes the daily Inside the Beltway column and provides additional coverage of breaking national news, plus long-term trends in politics, media issues, public opinion, popular culture, Hollywood foibles and “eureka” moments in health and science.

She has been a frequent broadcast commentator on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, C-SPAN, Voice of America, Citadel Broadcasting, Talk Radio Network and other news organizations. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Ms. Harper grew up in Texas and arrived in Washington in time for Watergate -- and has been tracking the political and media landscape ever since.

She is an active member of the American Federation of TV Radio Artists and Screen Actors Guild. She has won 14 journalism awards during her years at The Washington Times.

The Chris Wallace press tour gets under way

Easy come, easy go? "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace has announced he has left Fox News -- the nation's leading cable news provider -- to become a fixture at CNN+ -- the network's new streaming service. Mr. Wallace, CNN and Fox News issued fairly cordial statements and that was that. Follow-up press coverage in the hours that followed his announcement, however, was politicized very quickly. Mark Meadows has written a book

It has been a complex, fast moving week for Mark Meadows, the former chief of staff for former President Donald Trump. He has been in the news after declining to answer questions from the Jan. 6 special committee about the attack on the U.S. Capitol and his suing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over their subpoena plans. That evolving situation emerged Tuesday -- which also happened to be the publication date for Mr. Meadows' new book "The Chief's Chief." Published December 9, 2021

Kitchen table issues still rule politics, survey finds

The proverbial "kitchen table issues" are an ongoing force in elections, recently cited by Virginia Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin, three days after he won the race. A Monmouth University poll released Wednesday agrees: "Rising prices are the top kitchen table worry." Published December 8, 2021

The U.S. border challenge accelerates

Immigrants are still arriving -- and arriving -- at the southern U.S. border. Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin is in the region, and offers updated numbers about who was apprehended and who literally got away. "In the last 24 hours, the Border Patrol here in the Rio Grande Valley have encountered 1,810 illegal immigrants and there were 179 known gotaways, per a Dept. of Homeland Security source," Mr. Melugin wrote in a tweet Tuesday. Young Republicans have reason to celebrate

There is some joy percolating within the Republican Party. No, really. Consider the 900-member New York Young Republican Club, which was incorporated in 1911 with predecessor organizations dating back to 1856. Here's a telling but disquieting new survey. Harvard University's Institute of Politics surveyed 2,109 young Americans ages 18-29 on their political views and their perceptions of the U.S. as a nation. The results are not encouraging. Published December 1, 2021

Watch your step, now. Look out for flying debris. The "Kamikaze Democrats" are here. This handy little description was coined by The Wall Street Journal editorial board Tuesday to describe Democratic lawmakers who must now face the daunting reality of the multitrillion dollar tax, climate and entitlement spending bill, which passed in the U.S. House five days ago.
