Rob Manfred and the every team wants to win lie

Like his counterpart in the NFL, baseball commissioner Rob Manfred is tasked with taking teams' obvious actions and pretending that something else is going on. Published February 18, 2019

The Cleveland Browns have signed Kareem Hunt, the running back cut by Kansas City in November after a video showed him pushing and kicking a woman the previous February. Cleveland general manager John Dorsey, who drafted Hunt while working for Kansas City, on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019, said the Browns "fully understand and respect the complexity of questions and issues in signing a player with Kareem's history and do not condone his actions." Absence of reason is evident in Kareem Hunt signing reaction

At the risk of being portrayed as someone who condones violence against woman, I believe the Cleveland Browns made a sound decision signing Kareem Hunt. I'm also on a tiny island, judging by the predictable wave of blistering headlines. Published February 13, 2019

Bob Costas was just honest about football’s toll

Football fans want it both ways. We want a safer game, but we want the bone-jarring hits, too. Just know that it comes with a price to the athletes who take up the sport. Published February 11, 2019

Super Bowl stinker exactly what the NFL deserved

The teams took our anticipation and spiked it, like an offensive lineman who gets overly excited when handed the ball after a touchdown. They took our expectancy and crushed it, like a gunner slamming a punt returner who should've signaled for a fair catch They took our longing for a fantastic finale and served up one of the dullest, most-boring Super Bowls in recent memory. Davis' agent says the five-time All-Star has told the New Orleans Pelicans that he wants to be traded to a contending team. Agent Rich Paul confirmed the request to The Associated Press early Monday, Jan. 28. (AP Photo/Jim Mone, File) **FILE**

Anthony Davis’ trade request from Pelicans was the decent thing to do

Telling your team that you have no intention of staying is actually the decent thing to do. It gives the franchise an opportunity to acquire some assets as you depart. The old team rarely receives equal value when shipping off a superstar, but sometimes the deal works out fine. Published January 30, 2019

Every now and then, the tables are reversed, the script is flipped, and an athlete has leverage on the system. Published January 16, 2019

NFL’s conference title game storylines will extend to Super Bowl

We couldn't ask for a better set of games to determine a Super Bowl that will be tantalizing either way. We can have the geezers in a New England-New Orleans contest featuring all-time greats. Or maybe we get the fresh princes in a Kanas City-Los Angeles tilt, highlighting the next wave. Or it might be a mix-and-match pairing, something old, something new. Published January 14, 2019

Maori Davenport ruling makes Alabama a national disgrace

The matchup that should totally embarrass state residents is the Alabama High School Athletic Association against senior basketball star Maori Davenport. It's an example of a youngster -- one of the nation's best prep players -- being steamrolled by power-hungry adults, led by AHSAA executive director Steve Savarese. Published January 9, 2019

No contest between playoff run or high lottery pick for Wizards

To tank, or not to tank. That is the question. Is it nobler for the Wizards to suffer the rest of the year without John Wall and miss the playoffs for just the second time in six seasons? Or is it better to rally around Bradley Beal and push to qualify for a still-within-reach postseason berth in the watered-down Eastern Conference? Published January 2, 2019

For many rooting for Ernie Grunfeld, Bruce Allen gone beats rooting for wins

In the District, a different groundswell is forming among fans of the NBA and NFL franchises. These fans' biggest motivation isn't losses to create a succession of postseason parties. They want losses that trigger going-away parties for team architects Ernie Grunfeld and Bruce Allen. Published December 19, 2018
