Jennifer Harper

A graduate of Syracuse University, Jennifer Harper writes the daily Inside the Beltway column and provides additional coverage of breaking national news, plus long-term trends in politics, media issues, public opinion, popular culture, Hollywood foibles and “eureka” moments in health and science.

She has been a frequent broadcast commentator on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, C-SPAN, Voice of America, Citadel Broadcasting, Talk Radio Network and other news organizations. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Ms. Harper grew up in Texas and arrived in Washington in time for Watergate -- and has been tracking the political and media landscape ever since.

She is an active member of the American Federation of TV Radio Artists and Screen Actors Guild. She has won 14 journalism awards during her years at The Washington Times.

As a cultural indicator, the 2016 presidential election appears to have gone far beyond partisan politics and political theater. It is now perceived by many American voters as "a battle between good and evil," this according to William Jordan, elections analyst for YouGov polls. A podium, a microphone -- this simple set-up appears to pose a serious threat to the Clinton campaign. Consider that the last time Hillary Clinton held a formal press conference was Dec. 4, 2015. Oh, she grants one-on-one interviews with select journalists and late night comedians, but there has been no recent, formal event in which the candidate faces journalists from a cross section of news organizations and simply answers questions on the record. Photo ID for voters favored by 80 percent of Americans

A big, bodacious majority of Americans appear to believe that it is not an unreasonable request to ask a voter for a photo ID when they arrive at the polls. A new Gallup poll reveals that 80 percent of Americans favor "requiring all voters to provide photo identification at their voting place in order to vote." Published August 22, 2016
