School choice returns to D.C.

Understandably, a number of conservatives are not happy with the current budget deal Speaker of the House John Boehner, Ohio Republican, agreed to with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, and President Obama late last week on Friday, but one good thing that Mr. Boehner did stand tough on through the budget dealings was bringing back the D.C. school choice program.

The American people want to cut spending to help the private sector create jobs – and the Democrats who run Washington don’t. That’s why they didn’t propose a budget last year, which is why we’re where we are right now. Roll Call frames the issue at hand in terms of “the overall size of reductions to federal spending”: “…[T]he two sides are sharply divided over where to make the cuts. While the GOP insists on making cuts to discretionary domestic spending, Democrats have pushed for reductions to mandatory spending accounts.

Hutchison introduces bipartisan Senate bill to pay military in government shutdown

When President Barack Obama promised to veto the House's one week Continuing Resolution that would threaten the pay military personnel receive during a government shutdown, it remained a mystery as to why Speaker of the House John Boehner, Ohio Republican, did not bring to the floor a separate military pay bill proposed by fellow Republican Reps. Jack Kingston, of Georgia, and Louie Gohmert, of Texas. In the meantime, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Texas Republican, has stepped in and proposed a bill to assure military members their salaries in a timely manner if a government shutdown happens this week.
