In 2004, The Washington Times reported that Senator Christopher Dodd (D - CT) said that Senator Robert C. Byrd (D - W.V.) (a former Klansman) would have been a "great leader during the Civil War. Like Democratic leaders ignoring the controversy Senator Harry Reid (D - NV) has kicked up over his comments about President Barack Obama, Senator Tom Daschle simply brushed off Mr. Dodd's statements. Mr. Daschle, in fact, said that Mr. Dodd's words could not be compared to Senator Trent Lott's (R - MS) remarks about Senator Strom Thurmond (a former segregationist) two years before.:

This year, the United States Census Bureau is taking heat for question 9 on the new census form which reads: "What is Person 1's race?" -- the second option reads: "Black, African-Am., or Negro." Census officials defend their decision for the category, saying that a number of individuals wrote in "Negro" in the 2000 census. Actually, the 2000 Census included the same race options as the 2010 census form. However, what is striking in the 2010 census form is the lack of citizenship or birthplace question.
