TRAVEL: Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Lake Como, Italy
The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, in the Lombardia region of northern Italy, could win every award just by its location, but the staff, food, rooms and service are equally wonderful. Every modern amenity is here in an atmosphere of sumptuous splendor. An indoor and outdoor pool, 2 tennis courts, dock, fitness center, spa and private beach provide recreational activity. Sailing, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking are nearby, as is golf.

Compared with the bull fights in Mexico City, where they carry names like "Jalapeno," "Guajillo," or "Habanero", or whether they are killed at the end of the festival, as in Spain, the bulls in the Colombian corralejas are simply beasts that will live to see another day and another corraleja. They are the protagonists of this event and the memories it produces: 20 bulls in all, offering a true spectacle of entertainment and horror, four hours of danger and fury that characterize the bull fights, Colombian style.

Davy and Daryl Vogel's focus has been the goal is to reach Tierra del Fuego setting the record for the youngest cyclists to complete the 20,000 mile Pan American Highway. That focus all most had them missing the remarkable achievement they have reached this last week -- being the youngest cyclists to complete the Dalton and Alaska Highways. A journey of over 1,800 miles of sometimes rough, always wild terrain. The Northern Highways have let their mark on Daryl and Davy as much as they have left their mark on the highways and the people they have met.

On our bikes, we have steel racks in the front and rear on which we attach panniers. Panniers are saddlebags for bikes that have hooks on top and clips on the bottom that attach to the racks. We have a variety of styles and sizes – a very mismatched set, if you ask me. In our panniers we carry mostly small items, which are all wrapped in plastic bags so they don’t get wet in case of rain.

By Francisco Collazo In preparation for the festival of the bulls, also known as “la corraleja,“ an endless number of vendors set up their stands, like members of a circus traveling from one town to another, in search of an opportunity to sell their wares. The festival and its attendant preparation are in the air even though the event has not officially begun. Cumbia music is pumping loud, competing with the sounds of the “pelaos” (a slang term for kids), motorcycle taxis, squeals of pigs strapped to the backs of bicycles, the slap of dominoes on a table, loudspeakers announcing or offering products, and sounds of carts being pulled by different animals or by human strength.

By Francisco Collazo En preparacion para las Fiestas de Toros o “Corralejas,” se reunen un sin fin de vendedores ambulantes, que como el circo viajan de pueb lo en pueb lo en busca de una oportunidad para vender sus product os. La fiesta y preparacion aunque no oficial todavia empiezan temprano o por lo menos asi parece: la Cumbia domina el ambiente compitiendo con el ruidos de los "pel aos" (que es como se le llaman a los ninos), las motos-taxis, los crujidos de los cerdos llevados en "bici" (como se le llama a la bicicleta), los juegos de domino, y alto-parlantes que anuncian o ofrecen una variedad infinita de product os y sonidos de carretas movidas por diferentes animales o por fuerza humana.

I “get” why people are so captivated with this area. Mountains extending to the heavens and valleys so deep they seem to descend to the depths of the earth… Crystal clear, bright blue skies one minute and pouring rain the next… Moose, bears and beavers… It’s a life so foreign to the one I know and yet so appealing I can imagine the day I drop everything to move here...
