Let's play two! (maybe)

A doubleheader is supposed to get going at 4:35 p.m., with Randy Johnson again going after win No. 300. But the tarp is on the field, and there's more rain in the forecast.

Game postponed [updated]

After a 3 1/2-hour wait, umpires and Nats officials decide the field was unplayable. There will be a true doubleheader tomorrow, with Randy Johnson pitching the opener at 4:35 p.m.

Wrong end of history?

The Nationals have already played a part in some history-making events. They could be part of another tonight if Randy Johnson beats them for his 300th career win.

A complete offense; a 10-6 win

Entering Tuesday, the Nationals had faced Tim Lincecum two times, both last season. They'd scored two runs off him in 14 innings, and struck out 13 times. That they managed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings would have qualified as some accomplishment. Thru 6: Nats trail 5-4

Tim Lincecum still hasn't gotten on a roll, but the Nationals had more defensive problems in the middle third of this game, which is why they're trailing 5-4.

Thru 3: Hanging in against Lincecum

Tim Lincecum, the Giants' prodigous right-hander, has been slightly below his normal standard in the first three innings here, and the Nationals might have a chance to jump on the 2008 NL Cy Young winner if they can keep working counts.

Flores out at least three months

Catcher Jesus Flores, who has been out since May 15 with what was originially thought to be a right shoulder contusion, actually has a stress fracture in his shoulder that could keep him out three months and possibly for the rest of the season, acting general manager Mike Rizzo said today.

St. Claire fired

The Nationals fired pitching coach Randy St. Claire last night, letting the seventh-year assistant go eight months after sparing him in a purge of manager Manny Acta's coaches. Class AAA pitching coach Steve McCatty will replace St. Claire.
