In this May 15, 2017, selfie shows hiker Brien Bower in a snow storm along Pacific Crest Trail in California's southern Sierra Nevada. Bower, who hiked the 2,600-mile trail in 2015, detoured from the trail this spring after being caught in an avalanche and encountering dangerous river crossings and ended his effort to complete the hike after getting sick.
