In an April 9, 2014 photo, the Webberville Cemetery in Webberville, Mich., is shown. Shelly Kilroy Emmons was strolling through that cemetery in 2011 with her sister looking for grave sites of relatives. It was then that Shelly came upon her great-grandfather’s headstone with the name David Emens, 1839-82. Shelley said the dates on that marker were mistaken, and the last name apparently evolved into a new spelling over time, or the person who wrote it misspelled the name. A Civil War veteran is certainly deserving of something more fitting, she reasoned. That began what turned out to be a three-year effort that has produced a new maker at the grave and a special memorial service by the Sons of Union Veterans that will include a bugler on June 21 this year.
