2nd Lt. James Taaffe was the lone survivor after the plane flown by former Washington Senators player Elmer Gedeon was shot down over France on April 20, 1944. Gedeon and four other crew members were killed. Taaffe spent the rest of the war as a POW. (Courtesy Taaffe family)
