Elizabeth Dole, former US Senator from North Carolina - Having served many roles in federal government, Elizabeth Dole started out as Duke University's Student Body President before graduating in 1958. As a Democrat, she worked for the Johnson Administration in 1968. She switched her party affiliation to Independent when Nixon became president and continued to work for the White House. In the mid-70's, before marrying Senator Bob Dole, she switched her party registration once again, becoming a Republican. She went on to serve in the Reagan and Bush administrations before being elected to the US Senate in 2002.

Kay Hagan
Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina defeated Elizabeth Dole to win her seat in 2008. She faces a strong challenge from Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives Thom Tillis, a tea party favorite who earned primary endorsements from Mitt Romney and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
