El Alto (Spanish for The Heights) is the second largest city in the department of La Paz, Bolivia. Once merely a suburb of adjacent city of La Paz on the Altiplano highlands, El Alto is today one of Bolivia's largest and fastest-growing urban centers. The population in 2011 was 974,754.
