OPINION:
Earlier this week, President-elect Donald Trump called for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed Gulf of America. That same day, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, announced that she is writing legislation to begin the name change (“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announces bill to rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as ‘Gulf of America,’” web, Jan. 7).
Since this issue is international in scope, there may be some blowback for the U.S. taking unilateral action without agreement of the international community. But in the interest of accuracy, appropriateness and friendship, I would suggest the new name — if a change happens — be very similar to Mr. Trump’s suggestion, but for the addition of one small word.
Let’s make it Gulf of the Americas. Since this body of water touches two of the America landmasses (North America and Central America), this name is more descriptive and accurate.
A shorthand reference to it may become the American Gulf.
We should all be proud to be part of the Americas.
