OPINION:
Israel is fighting on multiple fronts against an anti-Western and antisemitic cabal of terror states and proxies allied with traditional enemies of our culture (“Pope Francis is anti-Israel because he’s anti-Western civilization,” web, Jan. 5).
The battle is not Israel’s alone. Antisemitism and anti-Israel bias are rife around the globe, not just in some Muslim nations, and misinformation about the origin of the Jewish state is so prevalent here and abroad that the information battle is part of the combat.
In Western countries characterized by free expression, students anxious to claim status as they emerge from adolescence often follow anti-Israel faculty in a procession of useful idiots, cheered by members of government who harbor this same hatred.
The particular difficulty in our democracy is that the bully pulpit has been occupied these past few years by a president dazed by the magnitude of the dilemma, a political party loudly clamoring in some quarters for a defeat of Israel and a foreign policy establishment inclined to negotiate an Israeli surrender rather than counsel what is required for the West (namely, a full-on military effort to defeat madmen in Tehran).
The pope hopes to stymie the Jewish nation and the West, all in service to a chimera of peace.
