Alex Ovechkin might get most of the media attention for this year’s Washington Capitals squad, but goaltender Logan Thompson is vying for his share of the spotlight. The NHL named Thompson as its First Star of the Week on Monday.

Thompson had been splitting the starting goaltending duties with Charlie Lindgren but earned three starts last week with his teammate on injured reserve. In those games, Thompson allowed just one goal on 62 shots, earning three wins to boost the Capitals to the top of the NHL standings.

Thompson, who the Capitals traded for this offseason, was flawless in wins over the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators. He strung together a 198-minute shutout streak before allowing a single goal to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.

The streak ranked as the third-longest in franchise history, trailing 200 minutes of shutout play by Jim Carey in 1996 and a 203-minute streak by Pat Riggin in 1984.

In his first season in Washington, Thompson ranks second in the league with a 2.09 goals-against average and third with a .925 save percentage.

Nashville Predators winger Filip Forsberg and Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak joined Thompson as the Second and Third Stars of the Week.

The Capitals return to action on Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers.
