Football fan President Trump called the game America’s “most popular sport — for good reason” ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
The president’s proclamation won’t surprise any astute viewers who follow television ratings — football accounted for 75 of the top 100 broadcasts in 2024. Only one baseball broadcast, the World Series-deciding fifth game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, made the list.
The Super Bowl, which will likely be the most-watched event of the year, is expected to further cement the NFL’s place atop American culture.
“Football is America’s most popular sport — for good reason — it fosters a sense of national unity, bringing families, friends, and fans together and strengthening communities,” the president said in a statement on Sunday. “This annual tradition transcends our differences and personifies our shared patriotic values of family, faith, and freedom heroically defended by our military service members, law enforcement officers, and first responders.”
Mr. Trump plans to attend Sunday’s game, making him the first sitting president to watch an NFL championship in person. On Sunday, the president focused on the big picture, painting the matchup as a display of American pride. After all, the eagle is the national bird.
“The coaches, players, and team staff on the field tonight represent the best of the best in professional football, but they also embody the best of the American Dream,” he said.
