The Washington Commanders’ already-thin secondary got even skinner Wednesday with the word that cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. will be out indefinitely after thumb surgery.

The 2023 first-round pick suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in Sunday’s season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team had no word on when he might be expected back in action.

Wearing a splint, he was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, but coaches limited his involvement during Thursday’s team activities.

Forbes has struggled to live up to his lofty draft status over his short NFL career.

Former Commanders coach Ron Rivera benched the Mississippi State product last season after some subpar performances.

Forbes’ difficulties from last season continued into training camp under new coach Dan Quinn before he fought his way back into the starting lineup for Week 1.

But against the Buccaneers, Forbes had another tough outing, allowing three catches for 38 yards and committing two costly infractions.

“We’re working really hard to develop him,” Quinn said of Forbes on Wednesday. “Would he want some plays back? You bet. But I’d also say this is a young player that we’re developing and working with him and so, he’s improving.”
