The Washington Commanders released cornerback Emmanuel Forbes on Saturday, the team announced. Forbes, 23, was the franchise’s first-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

The previous coaching staff selected the Mississippi State product and never found a consistent role in coach Dan Quinn’s defense. After struggling in training camp and during limited snaps during the first month of the regular season, Forbes was a healthy scratch in several games.

In 20 games with the Commanders, Forbes recorded two interceptions and 45 tackles across seven starts. His spot on the roster became increasingly precarious when Washington traded for cornerback Marshon Lattimore at the trade deadline.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, the Commanders also placed running back Austin Ekeler on injured reserve with a concussion.

The Commanders face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Northwest Stadium.
