I am one of those rare and hapless birds known as a Delaware Republican. I’d even consider myself a conservative. I did not vote for Sarah McBride as Delaware’s lone member of the House, and I do not ascribe to the extreme woke agenda. Nonetheless, I am embarrassed by my fellow Republicans’ mean-spiritedness in singling her out as the sole transgender member of Congress with new rules dictating which bathrooms she may use (“Speaker Johnson shuts the door on transgender women using Capitol’s female bathrooms,” Web Nov. 20).

I do not agree with Ms. McBride on policy matters, but I do not believe she poses a danger to anyone. I suspect that those promoting the new bathroom rule do not actually believe so, either. We should expect more civility and graciousness from our elected representatives who must work together for the public good.
