It wasn’t like St. Paul being struck down by divine lightning en route to Damascus, but two years ago I nonetheless encountered a revelation during the Christmas holidays. Walking around and admiring the beautiful outdoor decorations one night, as is the custom in metro Chicago, it hit me: Where were all the Nativity scenes?

For the remaining nights until Christmas, I counted the number of Nativity scenes that were part of the many grand displays, and there wasn’t 1 in 10 putting the Holy Family in the frame. Last year was only marginally better, and I suspect the situation was similar in many other large urban areas. Mainstream media’s pandering to leftist sensibilities has almost certainly played a part here, as I don’t recall this absence from more distant days past.

Regardless, a whole new holiday season is dawning now. Christians have another chance to reflect on their priorities, put Christ first in commemorating the season if they haven’t already and demonstrate that election. I hope to see more open-air evidence of that this year.
