The Washington Commanders are headed south this offseason to Miami, where the team will join the Dolphins for a joint practice ahead of their Aug. 17 preseason matchup.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel first reported the news on Tuesday with Commanders coach Dan Quinn confirming the team’s plans on Wednesday.

“There’s value in it to, say, just seeing other looks and people and formations and speed,” Quinn said. “There’s real value to doing it.”

Quinn noted that he was looking into more potential joint practices before the season kicks off in September.

Quinn has said he’s taking every opportunity he can get to prepare his team for the regular season.

During this week’s organized team activities, that preparation included hiring referees to help facilitate practices — the officials called out penalties and helped the coaching staff organize situations like a properly timed two-minute drill.

“Training the guys on what good looks like,” Quinn said of the referees’ value, noting that they could immediately explain penalty calls. “We don’t want to create bad habits. Having the officials here is a nice check system.”

The Commanders’ 2024 regular season begins with a visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 8.
