The Washington Commanders are sending quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks in a trade.
According to multiple reports, Washington will receive a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick in exchange for Howell, a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round selection.
Howell struggled in his first season as a starter, throwing 21 touchdowns, along with a league-leading 21 interceptions. Defenses also sacked him 65 times.
The move paves the way for the Commanders to select a future franchise quarterback with the No. 2 pick in April’s NFL draft.
New general manager Adam Peters signed veteran Marcus Mariota this week, but the journeyman quarterback said he’s ready to mentor a young passer.
“If I’m called upon to be ready to play, I’m very confident in that — and I’m also very confident in my role as a mentor,” Mariota said Thursday. “Whatever this team needs of me, I’m going to do it to the best of my abilities.”
