Defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders on Tuesday.
The fourth pick in the 2019 NFL draft played in San Francisco last season, starting every game and recording 3.5 sacks.
Washington general manager Adam Peters and defensive line coach Darryl Tapp worked with the Clemson product in San Francisco last season.
Ferrell is the latest in a flurry of free-agent moves for the Commanders, reported ESPN. Since the legal negotiating period opened at noon Monday, Washington has agreed to deals with seven free agents, including guard Nick Allegretti from Kansas City, center Tyler Biadasz from Dallas, kicker Brandon McManus from Jacksonville and running back Austin Ekeler from the Los Angeles Chargers.
Deals can’t be finalized until the new league year begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Ferrell and fellow free-agent pass rusher Dorance Armstrong from Dallas join a line that needs new blood, especially on the ends. Washington traded away two edge rushers — Montez Sweat and Chase Young — before the trade deadline in 2023. Despite playing in only eight games with the Commanders, Sweat still led the team in sacks.
Washington’s front office entered the negotiating period with a league-leading $91.5 million in cap space.
