Linebacker Frankie Luvu plans to join the Washington Commanders on a 3-year, $36 million contract, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Monday.

Luvu, who spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, has developed a reputation as a reliable tackling machine. He secured 125 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 2023.

Washington’s linebacker room was thin coming into the offseason. Linebackers David Mayo, Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo are all free agents after appearing regularly for Washington in 2023. Jamin Davis, a 2020 first-round pick, could be the only returning linebacker for the Commanders in 2024.

The NFL’s tampering period began at noon on Monday, allowing free agents to negotiate with teams. Deals can not be finalized until the new league year begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Luvu is the third reported addition for the Commanders in free agency, joining former Dallas Cowboys Tyler Biadasz and Dorance Armstrong. New general manager Adam Peters entered the negotiating period with a league-leading $91.5 million in cap space, allowing the team plenty of flexibility as they look to rebuild their roster.
