Jayson Werth reached baseball’s mountaintop when he won the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008. On Saturday, the Washington Nationals legend brought home another trophy when a horse he owns a stake in, Dornoch, won the Belmont Stakes.
Dornoch prevailed over Kentucky Derby champion Mystik Dan and early leader Seize the Grey to overcome 17-to-1 odds.
After hoisting the trophy, Werth compared the feeling to winning the World Series.
“I would put it right up there with winning at the biggest stage. Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none,” the 45-year-old told FOX Sports. “We just won the Belmont. This is as good as it gets in horse racing, this is as good as it gets in sports.”
Werth, a member of the Nationals’ Ring of Honor, became a co-owner of Dornoch in 2022. Now the retired baseball player will split a $1.2 million prize with his fellow owners.
“I’d put this up there with anything I’ve ever done,” the former All-Star said.
