Nick Bienz is technically a registered pro golfer, but his day job sees him selling clubs at Golf Galaxy.
On Monday, though, the Indiana native became a fan favorite after he downed three beers and shot a 7-under 65 to qualify for the PGA Tour’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Bienz said he was feeling nervous before the playoff at Monday’s qualifying event at the Orchards Golf Club in Michigan.
The winner of the playoff would play alongside the world’s best golfers this weekend at an official PGA Tour event.
To ease his nerves, Bienz ordered a beer in the clubhouse before returning to the course. Then he ordered another beer. A third beer only seemed logical, he told Monday Q Info’s Ryan French.
“Remember how I said three beers would be a perfect amount?” Bienz said. “Well, I’m perfect.”
Bienz emerged victorious from the playoff and will be one of 156 players at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. The Golf Galaxy employee will now have a shot at $1.65 million.
After his story went viral on social media, Bienz will have thousands of new fans cheering him on.
“It’s Nick’s world,” the official Golf Galaxy X account wrote. “We’re just living in it.”
Monday Q Info reported that several beer companies have also reached out about possible sponsorships for Bienz.
“This is by far the craziest day of my life,” Bienz wrote on X. “Thank you so much to everyone. Let’s have a freaking week!”
