The Washington Commanders could turn their 162-acre headquarters and training facility in Ashburn, Virginia, into data centers, according to a proposal filed in Loudoun County on Monday.

But officials from the Commanders and the county said the team isn’t looking for a new corporate home, at least not yet.

“This isn’t a surprise,” Buddy Rizer, Loudoun County’s director of economic development, told The Burn, a news site that covers the county. “We know that data center land sells for a premium. Not having those rights secured impacts land values. They are just making a smart business decision.”

A Commanders spokesperson confirmed that the team is not planning to move its corporate headquarters or practice facility soon.

“Loudoun County is where many of our coaches, players and employees not only work, but also call home,” the team spokesperson said in a statement. “Our intention in filing for this approval is to secure the option and flexibility for possible future development on our 162-acre site, and it is not a plan to take any action in the near future.”
