Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them, like “Bob the Cap Catcher,” wear floral Speedos.
American swimmer Emma Webber lost her cap during Sunday’s 100-meter breaststroke heat. Instead of having one of the athletes dive to the bottom of the pool, a mysterious man hopped into the water to save the day.
The NBC broadcast dubbed him “Bob the Cap Catcher.” Clad in a tight swimsuit, the man quickly dove into the pool and emerged victorious with Webber’s swim cap. He hoisted it into the air like Perseus holding Medusa’s head, eliciting applause from the crowd.
The fans in Paris greeted him with catcalls and cheers, while viewers on social media turned him into an immediate sensation. An NBC video of the moment has been viewed more than 4 million times on social media.
“He’s an icon, he’s a legend, he is the moment,” X user Shannon Kennedy wrote.
With Webber’s swim cap saved, the swimming heat could continue.
“Y’all may not like it, but this is peak male performance,” another X user joked.
Webber eventually finished eighth in her heat, while South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker led the pack.
Fans waiting for another appearance of “Bob” can tune into the 100-meter breaststroke final on Monday afternoon.
