D.C. police arrested and charged a man with murder Thursday, saying he ran a red light and killed a woman in a crash in Southeast last summer.

Metropolitan Police said they took Andre Johnson, 30, of Northwest, into custody on second-degree murder charges in connection to the collision in June that killed 19-year-old passenger Madison Jones.

Police said Mr. Johnson was driving eastbound on Pennsylvania Avenue SE on June 8, when he sped through a red light and T-boned a car heading north on 11th Street SE.

The force of the crash threw Jones from the rear passenger seat. Police said she died at the scene.

Authorities said Mr. Johnson and a passenger in his car ran away after the crash.

Court documents said the suspect called police shortly after the incident to report his car had been totaled.

At the time, Mr. Johnson agreed to have a non-custodial interview with officers at the police station, according to court documents. Authorities said the suspect never showed up to talk with them.

Court documents also said Mr. Johnson was on release from two separate cases of driving without a license.
