OPINION:
President-elect Donald Trump must be joking about having Canada become America’s 51st state (“Donald Trump again calls to buy Greenland after eyeing Canada and the Panama Canal,” web, Dec. 23).
Let’s be clear: This would be a dumb idea, even aside from the fact that Canada brought us Bryan Adams and has French as an official language.
If it became a state, Canada would instantly become the largest one in the union, both by population (40.1 million to California’s 38.97 million) and geographical area (3.855 million square miles to Alaska’s 665,384 square miles). It would have the largest delegation in the House of Representatives, and it would be entitled to elect two members of the Senate, just like any other state.
With Canadians having a reputation for being materially more liberal on average than Americans, this would almost certainly translate into generational Democratic control of the presidency and both houses of Congress.
So let’s leave things as they are and let Canada keep its poutine and socialized medicine.
