OPINION:
The thought of long-range American missiles being launched from Ukraine deep into Russian territory seems insane at this point (“White House sending Ukraine fresh batches of weapons in last months of Biden’s term,” web, Dec. 2).
Is the Biden administration trying to start the last world war before it exits?
I’m old enough to remember when we came within a “hair’s breadth” of nuclear conflict during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. A valuable lesson was revealed about what our priorities should be. We learned that atomic annihilation is possible when communication breaks down or is nonexistent. A Moscow-Washington “hotline” was installed to provide instant communication should such a crisis occur again.
U.S. and NATO involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has not gone as planned. The powers that be are playing dice with the future of humanity. After such a humiliating pullout from Afghanistan, is the Biden administration escalating this proxy war to save face? Over 500,000 casualties have piled up since Russia’s invasion. Could this have been nipped in the bud if NATO and Russian leaders were talking?
As this unwinnable war drags on, all our attention should be focused on ending it through negotiation, not escalation. If we keep poking the bear, he might decide he’s had enough and create a situation that gets completely out of hand. After that, nothing else will matter.
