The Washington Commanders will likely play this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles without starting middle linebacker Cody Barton.
Barton suffered what is believed to be an ankle sprain early in last week’s loss to the New York Giants, and left MetLife Stadium in a walking boot.
The severity of the injury will determine how quickly he can return to play, with the team scheduled to give its first official injury update after Wednesday’s practice.
In Barton’s absence, Washington struggled with a combination of Jamin Davis and David Mayo in the linebacker spot. Both players missed tackles, and Davis committed a key penalty that extended the Giants’ final drive.
Barton was the team’s “green dot” linebacker, meaning he had a headset capable of communicating with defensive coaches on the sideline. When he left the game, Davis took over those duties, and played every snap for the rest of the game.
Washington also played Khaleke Hudson at the linebacker position on 36% of snaps, more than usual, and has DeJon “Scooter” Harris available to provide additional depth if needed, though Harris only played on special teams during Sunday’s game.
