Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning in Tampa, Florida, according to a police report.
Sumlin was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Saturday at a RaceTrac gas station at 5951 U.S. Route 301 in the northeast section of the city. The Hillsborough County police report of his arrest says Sumlin refused a breathalyzer and was released on a $500 bond. The charge carries up to a maximum sentence of six months in prison.
The news of Sumlin’s arrest was first reported by Taylor Lyons of The Diamondback.
A Maryland spokesperson said that the university is “aware of the incident this past weekend,” but “as this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”
The arrest came during Maryland’s bye week. The 59-year old Sumlin is in his first year with the Terrapins as co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. He was previously a head coach at Houston, Texas A&M and Arizona.
