Police in Southern California said Friday a man shot a suspect who was breaking into a car.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said Alexander Marquez, 36, of Rancho Cucamonga, called in a vehicle burglary around 8:15 a.m. Friday in Bloomington.

Police said Mr. Marquez shot the suspect a short time later.

Deputies arrived to find the suspect, Dennis Smith, 24, of Hemet, suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower body.

Mr. Smith was taken to a hospital, according to police.

Police said they had seized evidence related to the incident, but didn’t say if Mr. Smith would face any charges.

Authorities said Mr. Marquez was seen holding a firearm when they arrived, but then fled inside a business. He was detained without incident soon after.

Mr. Marquez was taken in for questioning but released without charges.
