Every Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil awakens from his nap, leaves his den and stays awake long enough to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early spring.

Just like Phil, Sens. Mark Kelly, John Tester and others are seen only when they’re up for reelection. They then emerge from their respective Washington dens, identify an issue of importance to their constituency and proceed to ask for six more years because the time is vital to proper handling of the issue.

In the case of Mr. Kelly, the southern border was not a crisis or even a problem until he began campaigning in earnest to retain his Arizona seat. Since his election-night victory, Mr. Kelly has been totally absent regarding the crisis, returning to his comfortable confines. Apparently the crisis is over.

Next we have Mr. Tester. He, like Phil, saw a shadow — not his own, but that of a massive Chinese spy balloon traversing Montana. He immediately was front and center demanding answers. He also voted to overturn President Biden’s ESG-investment rule, knowing it was a free vote. What courage.

At least Punxsutawney Phil shows up once a year.
