Before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced his intention to run for the GOP presidential nomination, I held him in pretty high regard. Under his administration, Florida seemed to emulate President Ronald Reagan’s “city on a hill.”

It turns out, however, that he is just another ambitious politician who will say and do anything necessary to advance his campaign (“DeSantis on Trump: ‘Of course he lost’ in 2020,” web, Aug. 7).

Apparently Mr. DeSantis remains in a very small group of people who have yet to realize that former President Donald Trump is crushing the GOP opposition and will assuredly be the Republican presidential candidate for 2024.

Were Mr. DeSantis smart, he would end his campaign now and move to support Mr. Trump for the presidency. It would turn him from failed GOP candidate into a great statesman overnight and maintain his opportunity for 2028.

However, that appears most unlikely to happen. More probable is that Mr. DeSantis will suffer a crushing defeat at the polls, likely ending his chances for higher office, a la Jeb Bush.
