OPINION:
Although Gene Marks is correct that business should serve all customers, the cases of the Colorado baker and web designer are not about serving (“Should a private business be forced to serve an LGBTQ customer?” Web, May 3). They are instead about forced messaging.
Baker Jack Phillips and web designer Lori Smith had already been serving customers of all orientations and races. Gay people can buy any cakes they want, just like anybody else. But Mr. Phillips’ conscience will not allow him to design specialized cakes celebrating gay marriage or transitioning. Ms. Smith’s lawsuit, too, is about forced messaging.
Mr. Marks says he is Jewish, and he equates these cases with businesses refusing service to Jewish customers. But in serving his customers, should he be forced to promote the message of Jesus’ resurrection or moving the Sabbath to Sundays? Freedom from forced speech and religious freedom are the issues here.
