During free agency, Cornelius Lucas said he heard from a good number of teams — more than the offensive tackle had experienced in the past.

But …

“Everyone was fakin’ and booty shakin’,” Lucas said Thursday. “Washington was the only one who came through.”

Lucas re-signed with the Washington Commanders on Thursday, agreeing to a two-year, $8 million deal. The 30-year-old returns after two years with the Burgundy and Gold in which he served as a valuable swing tackle and key depth piece.

Lucas started seven games last season, filling in on the right side of the line for rookie Sam Cosmi. The year before that, Lucas served as the team’s primary left tackle — taking over for Geron Christian, who was benched after six games.

The signing helps Washington retain some continuity upfront. The team’s offensive line has experienced some changes this offseason with the Commanders cutting starter Ereck Flowers and letting Brandon Scherff walk in free agency. Washington signed veteran Andrew Norwell to play left guard, while Wes Schweitzer and Saahdiq Charles are in-house options to replace Scherff at right guard.

Lucas told reporters after the season he was looking for “commitment,” which could be shown through “acts of kindness” and “extending the wealth.” Speaking to reporters Thursday, Lucas said he found a happy medium with Washington’s offer.

“We all want to retire and live on a beach and drive fast cars and have all that money and all that kind of stuff,” Lucas said. “Today I feel like Washington put me in a trajectory [to get] all that stuff.”

Next season will be Lucas’ ninth in the league. He’s also spent time with the Detroit Lions, the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints and the Chicago Bears.
