There is a new chief in town. How fortunate Fairfax County is to have Kevin Davis as its new police chief. Chief Davis is an excellent choice. He is highly experienced in the law-enforcement and public-safety arenas and is a well-educated, street-savvy, bright professional with keen insight into people and situations.

He is well-versed in community engagement. In his previous position in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where I had the pleasure and privilege to professionally interact with him, he was on top of his game in reaching out to the community, establishing positive relationships and making noteworthy impact on police-community relations. He was always approachable, amenable to conversation, a good listener and astute in critical thinking and strategic analysis.

Some Fairfax County residents and community members have jumped the gun in their immediate criticism of the county’s new hire. Not only is this unfair, but the prejudgment is unwarranted. The community needs to be tolerant and patient, and give Chief Davis a chance before allowing their pre-established beliefs to become set in stone.

As a soon-to-be Fairfax County resident, I could not be more pleased with the new chief. As a former colleague of Chief Davis’ in the criminal justice system, I believe the choice speaks loud and clear about the good judgment exercised by county officials.

Chief Davis is already a proven entity, and I know he will demonstrate that he will be an asset to Fairfax County. He is definitely a high-caliber, seasoned professional ready to face the challenges ahead. The county board deserves applause for a choice well made, and Chief Davis deserves congratulations.
