PERKINSTON, Miss. (AP) - Students at a community college on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast have a new place to call home.
On Thursday, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College opened a new 57,331-square-foot residence hall at the Perkinston campus, which can house up to 206 students.
Administrators said the $15 million project was funded by county district supervisors from Harrison, Stone, Jackson and George counties, WLOX-TV reported.
As soon as the ribbon was cut, eager student began moving in.
Resident Assistant Nejai Spencer was excited to move in after feeling stuck in her house due to COVID-19. She’s looking forward to enjoying time away from home and with her peers, instead.
“It’s good that we all can stay on campus; we don’t have to be home. We can have some real type of interaction with other students during the whole COVID, and everything,” Spencer said.
MGCCC President Mary Graham explained that student interaction, getting the full college experience, and recruiting more students were the goals of the residence hall.
“We’re always looking to bring in more students. You know, it’s important that people know that they can get that traditional college experience within 30 minutes of their home,” said Graham.
Spring classes start Monday, but the college is still accepting students for enrollment.
