HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston police officer fatally shot a man who authorities said brandished a pistol as he was being arrested on Tuesday for a series of robberies.

The shooting at a north Houston hotel happened as officers were set to arrest three men who had been wanted for a series of area robberies, said Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Officers had begun surveilling the suspects earlier Tuesday morning and had followed them to the hotel when the shooting happened.

One of the men raised a gun at police and an officer fired one shot, hitting him in the chest, Acevedo said.

The 27-year-old man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. His name was not immediately released by authorities.

The two other suspects were taken into custody. One of the men wore a bulletproof vest and officers found an assault-type rifle in a hotel room they had been staying in, Acevedo said.

The officer who fatally shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave. The shooting will be investigated by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
