MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Alabama State University are joining together in a bid to increase diversity in the arts world.
The Montgomery-based theater and the historically Black school have signed an agreement to provide ways people of color can foster careers in the arts and develop into leaders.
An announcement released Friday said the Shakespeare Festival and Alabama State will work to provide students with internships, mentorships, professional training and class credits for education in the arts. There is currently a lack of diversity in the nonprofit arts sector, it said.
“This will broaden the educational and career opportunities of our students and will help by building pathways of diversity and artistic enrichment for them in production and leadership roles in the arts and entertainment sector,” said Alabama State President Quinton Ross.
