WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The former deputy chief of the Rhode Island Airport Police Department - who was fired in November for insubordination - has filed a lawsuit to be reinstated with back pay.

Helen Ricci alleges that the Rhode Island Airport Corporation did not adhere to the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights when terminating her, the Providence Journal reported.

Ricci argues in the lawsuit that she demanded a hearing under the Bill of Rights statute and the Airport Corporation never granted her one.

According to court documents, the corporation said that at the time of her dismissal she was the highest-ranking officer and therefore exempt from the Bill of Rights law.

Ricci’s lawyer, Joseph F. Penza Jr., said that the lawsuit is not to dispute if she deserved to be fired, but if the proper procedure was followed in her termination.
