WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. attorney for West Virginia’s northern district is stepping down.
U.S. Attorney Bill Powell announced his resignation effective Feb 28. The move will allow President Joe Biden to appoint a successor.
Nominated by former President Donald Trump, Powell began his term as U.S. attorney in October 2017.
His office helped coordinate drug enforcement efforts, including prosecutions of health care fraud involving physicians and pharmacists. He also worked with the FBI and the Department of Veterans Affairs in the investigation of eight deaths at a Clarksburg veterans hospital. The investigation resulted in the second-degree murder conviction of a former employee.
The northern district serves 32 of West Virginia’s 55 counties.
Powell previously was as a chief deputy prosecutor in Jefferson County. He has served as an attorney in private practice as well as an assistant U.S. attorney in the state’s southern district.
