President Trump announced Friday that he will award the Medal of Freedom to legendary college football coach Lou Holtz.

At the White House, with Mr. Holtz attending his press briefing, the president called him “an incredible leader.”

“He’s been a friend of mine,” the president said, recounting numerous letters he’s received about Mr. Holtz from other college coaches including Nick Saban of Alabama.

“We’ve looked at Lou’s life and his career and what he’s done for charity, and the football is obvious,” he said of the former coach at Notre Dame, Arkansas, South Carolina and other teams. “He was a great coach, but what he’s done beyond even coaching…”

The Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor.
