President Trump said Joseph R. Biden isn’t holding campaign rallies for a simple reason — because “nobody will show up.”

In the first presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle, Mr. Biden said it has been foolish for Mr. Trump to hold large rallies during the coronavirus epidemic, arguing that it increases the chance of spreading the disease.

Mr. Trump said Mr. Biden would hold more big campaign events if he could attract crowds, but he can’t.

“No one shows up to his rallies,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump said his rallies have not led to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“We have tremendous crowds, as you see,” Mr. Trump said. “Joe does the circles and has three people.”
