Riots and protests have been a fixture in the news media this year, occurring in 140 cities across the nation and expected to top up to $2 billion in damages, according to recent figures from the Insurance Information Institute. In addition, a new Rasmussen Reports survey revealed that public concerns about riots and violence is expected to sway voter preference in the presidential election.

What about violence related to Election Day? A majority of Americans now expect mass protests to occur if President Trump is reelected, according to an Economist/YouGov poll released Monday. Here’s what it found:

• 49% of U.S. adults say it is “very likely” there will be mass protests if Mr. Trump wins reelection; 52% of Republicans, 39% of independents and 60% of Democrats agree.

• 25% overall say it is “somewhat likely”; 21% of Republicans, 28% of independents and 26% of Democrats agree.

• 12% are not sure if there will be protests; 8% of Republicans, 19% of independents and 6% of Democrats agree.

• 10% say it is “not very likely” there will be protests; 13% of Republicans, 11% of independents and 5% of Democrats agree.

• 4% say it is “not likely at all”; 6% of Republicans, 4% of independents and 3% of Democrats agree.
