SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Busy bridges in southern Maine are going to be the subject of repair work for the coming weeks.

The Maine Department of Transportation said the work will be performed on the southbound side of Interstate 295 in the South Portland area. The project will take place on the bridges that carry the interstate over Westbrook Street and Route 703, the department said.

The first phase of the work was slated to begin in mid-September. A second phase, which will reduce traffic to one lane, is expected to start in October. The transportation department said the work will be done by the end of the year.

The state said it has awarded a contract of about $800,000 for the work.
