DOVER, Del. (AP) - The president of Delaware State University is asking students to “be accountable” in the wake of a the shooting death of a student at a large party in Dover.
The News Journal reported Thursday that school president Tony Allen called Devin Wright’s slaying a “senseless loss” and a “heinous crime.”
Allen also reminded students to “not only be careful, but to also be accountable.”
“In addition to our COVID-19 policy, which prohibits large gatherings on campus, the Governor has issued several emergency declarations that effectively make such gatherings illegal and subject to criminal penalty,” Allen wrote in a statement.
“It is important that you remember that our actions have consequences.”
A party was attended by “mostly” Delaware State University students, police said. It began jovially and ended in tragedy when a shootout between several people killed Wright and injured another man.
University spokesman Carlos Holmes said the school is investigating the actual number of people who attended the party. Dover police said they stand by their assessment of 300 to 500 attendees and that the majority were Delaware State University students.
